Child Benefit Payments. How and when will I be paid?

Weekly rate from 5 January 2009

  • Child Benefit payments for oldest child - £20
  • Child Benefit payments for other children - £13.20

The majority of the time, the money for Child Benefit will be paid into an account via Direct Payment. The account chosen will need to be either: 1) in your name 2) in your partners name 3) both in your own and your partners name 4) in the name of someone acting on your behalf 5) jointly in your own name of someone acting on your behalf.

You should know the outcome of your claim and receive pay with eight weeks. Often, the first payment will be within two weeks.

Once your Child Benefit claim has been received it will be assessed and you will subsequently receive an ‘award notice’ should your claim be successful. The notice will tell you how much you are owed and when you will receive it. It is possible for the award notice to arrive after your first payment

New to the UK?

Concerning foreign nationals who have just arrived in the UK, there are special rules regarding Child Benefit. You need to be an ‘ordinary resident’ in the UK to receive Child Benefit. The HMRC will need to check things like where you intend to live and make sure you have then ‘right to reside’ in the UK. So it may take a little while for us to check whether you qualify. If this applies to you, you may have to wait a bit longer before you receive your first Child Benefit Payment.
